Natural habitat
Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis originates from fast-flowing, highly oxygenated mountain streams and sluggish river margins of southern China and northern Vietnam, where it inhabits clearwater streams with abundant submerged vegetation and fine gravel substrates. This species thrives in densely planted environments, utilizing the natural biofilm for grazing.
Where they are found
Snowball shrimp are widely found in various freshwater bodies across Taiwan, adapting well to different environmental conditions.
Aquarium care
For optimal care, provide a well-planted aquarium with ample hiding spaces created using mosses and driftwood. A minimum tank size of 20-30 liters is suggested, with a substrate of fine gravel or shrimp sand to promote biofilm growth. Regular water changes are necessary to ensure stable parameters, particularly in avoiding copper, which can be lethal to this species.
Feeding
They primarily feed on algae and biofilm, but can also be provided with shrimp pellets or blanched vegetables to supplement their diet. It's important to avoid overfeeding, with leftover food removed after a few hours to prevent water quality issues.
Compatibility
Snowball shrimp are compatible with small, peaceful fish and other invertebrates. Avoid larger or aggressive species that may prey on them.
Breeding
Breeding occurs readily in stable environments with no predators present. The female develops a visible saddle carrying around 20-40 eggs, which she will fan for several weeks until they hatch into miniature adults. No larval stage is present, making this species straightforward to breed in the right conditions.
