Natural habitat

Pseudotropheus saulosi is endemic to the Taiwan Reef area of Lake Malawi. They dwell among large boulders at depths ranging from 5 to 20 meters, highlighting their preference for rocky environments rich in biocover where they feed.

Where they are found

This species is endemic to Lake Malawi and commonly found in rocky habitats. It tends to prefer nursery areas where young fish can hide from predators and overcrowding.

Aquarium care

To properly care for Pseudotropheus saulosi, maintain stable water conditions with temperatures between 24°C to 28°C and a pH level between 7.8 to 8.6. Regular water changes and strong filtration are essential to provide a healthy environment. Create a well-structured aquarium with rocks and caves, allowing for hiding spaces while facilitating territorial behaviors. A minimum tank size of 200 liters ensures ample swimming space and prevents stress among the fish.

Feeding

In captivity, a varied diet is important. Adult Saulosi should be fed twice daily with a mix of flake food, pellets, and occasional treats like frozen daphnia. Fry benefit from a diet of frozen baby brine shrimp and powdered flake. It is important to ensure all life stages receive appropriate nutrition for optimal growth.

Compatibility

Although Pseudotropheus saulosi are relatively peaceful, males can exhibit territorial behavior, especially when breeding. It is advisable to maintain a higher ratio of females to males within the tank to reduce aggression. Compatible tank mates include other Malawi cichlids that share similar water requirements and temperaments.

Breeding

Breeding occurs within caves; females will mouthbrood the eggs and fry. It's essential to provide a quiet environment with reduced aggression from tank mates to ensure successful breeding.
